I tried to find out if drug testing changed the UFC
USADA started testing UFC fighters in July 2015. Everyone has an opinion about whether it changed anything; nobody had a number. I built one: a difference-in-differences comparison against Bellator, the one comparable promotion that didn't adopt it. Then I built a way to check whether my own method could be fooled into finding an effect that wasn't there.

I tried to teach a computer to watch rugby league
Rugby league has almost no public training data. I took the one NRL set I could find, re-tagged 2,508 frames to add the ball, and trained a detector to read matches straight from broadcast footage. It found the players. It couldn't reliably read the game. Here's how far it got, what I got wrong, and all the code.

What I Didn't Put On My CV
Before I ever sat at a desk for a living, I competed in amateur MMA. Small gym, smaller scene, never came up in an interview. I didn't understand what it had actually left me with until years into analytics work, when I noticed the same instinct showing up in both places.
